IB Math AA vs AI: Which Should You Take?
Short answer: take Analysis and Approaches (AA) if engineering, computer science, math or physical science is possible, at HL if the program names HL. Take Applications and Interpretation (AI) if you want statistics and modelling and your programs accept it. The IB does not rank the two courses. Universities do, program by program, and that is the part to check before you choose.
What the IB says each course is for
The IB's course guides describe AA as having “a strong emphasis on the ability to construct, communicate and justify correct mathematical arguments”, with topics “amenable to investigation, conjecture and proof”, including proof by induction at HL. AI “emphasizes the meaning of mathematics in context”, focusing on applications and modelling, and “makes extensive use of technology”. Both include functions, calculus and statistics; the guides' suggested hours show where the weight sits.
| Topic (hours) | AA SL | AA HL | AI SL | AI HL |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Number and algebra | 19 | 39 | 16 | 29 |
| Functions | 21 | 32 | 31 | 42 |
| Geometry and trigonometry | 25 | 51 | 18 | 46 |
| Statistics and probability | 27 | 33 | 36 | 52 |
| Calculus | 28 | 55 | 19 | 41 |
| Toolkit and the exploration | 30 | 30 | 30 | 30 |
Read the calculus and statistics rows. AA SL gives calculus 28 hours and AI SL 19; AI SL gives statistics 36 hours and AA SL 27. Every course totals 150 hours at SL and 240 at HL.
The calculator is the clearest difference
On AA Paper 1, “students are not permitted access to any calculator”. On AI, “for both examination papers, students must have access to a graphic display calculator (GDC) at all times”. AA tests whether you can do the algebra by hand; AI tests whether you can set a problem up and finish it with technology. Our Paper 1 vs Paper 2 guide covers the AA side.
SL vs HL
HL adds 90 teaching hours, HL-only content and a third paper: Paper 3, one hour of “two compulsory extended response problem-solving questions” worth 20%. The guides describe the HL student too. For AA HL, “strong algebraic skills and the ability to understand simple proof”; for AI HL, “good algebraic skills and experience of solving real-world problems”, comfortable exploring with technology. The exploration is 20% at both levels of both courses.
Which university programs name AA
What each program's IB admissions page says about math, read October 20, 2026. Requirements change, so open the link before you decide.
| Program | IB math it names | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Waterloo Computer Science | HL Analysis and Approaches, minimum 6 | uwaterloo.ca |
| Waterloo Software Engineering | Analysis and Approaches and Physics (HL recommended), minimum 4 in each | uwaterloo.ca |
| U of T Arts and Science, science and business categories | AA SL, AA HL or AI HL satisfies the Calculus prerequisite; AI SL does not | www.artsci.utoronto.ca |
| U of T Mississauga | AA SL or HL, or AI HL, covers Calculus and Advanced Functions; AI SL covers Advanced Functions only | www.utm.utoronto.ca |
The pattern: AI SL is the course that closes doors, AI HL is accepted for calculus prerequisites at U of T but not named by Waterloo's computer science and engineering pages, and AA at either level is accepted everywhere in the table. If you are at an Ontario IB school, ask your coordinator which Ontario codes your IB math earns; programs that want calculus read them as MHF4U and MCV4U.
How to decide
- Engineering, computer science, math, physics: AA, and HL where a program names it.
- Life sciences, business, social sciences: either, but check that AI SL is accepted before taking it.
- Not sure yet: AA SL. It is accepted in every row above and keeps HL AA reachable if you move up.
- Strong with data, weaker with pure algebra, and your programs accept it: AI HL.
IB Math AA vs AI FAQ
Is AI SL enough for a university science or business program?+
Often not. U of T's Arts and Science page lists AI SL among the courses that do not satisfy its Calculus prerequisite, while AA SL, AA HL and AI HL do. Check the program's own IB page.
Is AA harder than AI?+
The IB does not rank them. AA has more calculus hours and a no-calculator paper; AI has more statistics and requires a GDC on every paper. The harder course is the one whose strengths are not yours.
Does the 2027 syllabus change which to pick?+
No. The IB's new briefs keep AA Paper 1 with no technology and AI with technology on every paper, and both courses keep the exploration at 20%.
