MCR3U vs MCF3M: Which Should You Take?
Short answer: take MCR3U if there is any chance you will apply to a university program that needs Grade 12 math. MCR3U leads straight to Advanced Functions (MHF4U) and then Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U). MCF3M does not: from MCF3M, the only way to MHF4U is through the college course MCT4C first. If your plans are college, or a university program with no math requirement, MCF3M is a fine choice.
The two courses side by side
Everything in this table comes from the ministry's curriculum document, The Ontario Curriculum, Grades 11 and 12: Mathematics (revised 2007).
| MCR3U Functions | MCF3M Functions and Applications | |
|---|---|---|
| Type | University preparation | University/college preparation |
| Prerequisite | Grade 10 Principles of Mathematics, Academic (MPM2D) | Grade 10 Principles (MPM2D) or Grade 10 Foundations of Mathematics, Applied (MFM2P) |
| Focus | Functions in general: discrete and continuous, trig, exponential, inverses, algebra | Quadratic, trig and exponential functions, used to model real situations |
| Opens MHF4U | Yes, directly | Only through MCT4C first |
| Opens MCV4U | Yes, after or with MHF4U | Only through MCT4C and MHF4U |
| Opens MDM4U | Yes | Yes |
| Opens MCT4C (college) | Yes | Yes |
Which programs need MCR3U?
Any program that requires MHF4U or MCV4U needs MCR3U behind it, in practice. In the dataset behind Am I Cooked, which copies each program's required courses from its university's pages, 222 of 273 programs list MHF4U or MCV4U. Every program in computer science, science and math does.
The programs that list neither are mostly in nursing and the arts and social sciences. If that is where you are headed, MCF3M still leads to Data Management (MDM4U), a Grade 12 university course. Check the exact program on its university's page, since requirements differ school to school.
Is MCR3U much harder?
It is more abstract. MCF3M spends its time on quadratic, trig and exponential functions in real-world models. MCR3U covers those too, then adds the algebra that Grade 12 runs on: function notation and inverses, rational expressions and radicals, transformations, trig identities and sequences and series.
That extra algebra is the point: MHF4U assumes it from the first week. If MCR3U feels like a stretch, the fix is usually more practice, not a different course.
Can you switch later?
From MCF3M, yes, but it costs a course: MCT4C (Mathematics for College Technology) is the bridge, and it takes a full credit before MHF4U. Some students take MCR3U in summer school instead. Either way, talk to your guidance counsellor before Grade 12 timetables are set. Our Ontario math course order guide lays out the full path.
How to decide
- Engineering, computer science, science, math or business: MCR3U.
- Not sure yet: MCR3U. It keeps every option open, and MCF3M closes some.
- College, or a university program with no Grade 12 math: MCF3M works.
- Already in MCR3U and struggling? The MCR3U exam review and the free unit tests are the place to start.
MCR3U vs MCF3M FAQ
Can I take MHF4U after MCF3M?+
Not directly. The Ontario curriculum lists MCR3U or MCT4C as the prerequisite for MHF4U, so from MCF3M you take MCT4C first.
Can I take MCR3U with Grade 10 applied math?+
Not under the curriculum's prerequisites. MCR3U lists Grade 10 Principles of Mathematics, Academic (MPM2D). MCF3M accepts either the academic or the applied Grade 10 course.
Which courses can I take after MCF3M?+
Data Management (MDM4U), Mathematics for College Technology (MCT4C) and Foundations for College Mathematics (MAP4C), according to the curriculum's prerequisite table.
