MCV4U Derivatives Practice Test (with Solutions)

Derivatives is the unit where calculus starts to feel like calculus. Your test will ask you to differentiate with the power, product, quotient and chain rules, find tangent lines, use implicit differentiation and explain what a derivative means in a word problem. Work each one below on paper, then check the solution.

Derivatives FAQ

What is on an MCV4U derivatives test?+

The derivative rules (power, product, quotient and chain), higher derivatives, tangent lines, implicit differentiation, sketching f' from the graph of f, and explaining what a derivative means in context. The questions on this page cover all of these.

When do you use the chain rule?+

Whenever one function sits inside another, like a bracket raised to a power or the square root of a polynomial. Differentiate the outside, leave the inside as it is, then multiply by the derivative of the inside.

How do you find the equation of a tangent line?+

Substitute x into the function to get the point. Substitute the same x into the derivative to get the slope. Then use y - y1 = m(x - x1).

What does a derivative mean in a word problem?+

It is the rate of change of the quantity with respect to the variable, so it carries units, like cats per year. A negative value means the quantity is decreasing at that moment.
