MCV4U Dot and Cross Product Practice Test (with Solutions)

On Martian Lab the dot and cross product live in Cartesian Vectors, where every vector is written as [x, y, z]. The free test has magnitudes and unit vectors, the angle between two vectors, a vector projection, collinear and orthogonal vectors, and the area and volume the cross product gives you. Work each part on paper, then check it against the solution.

  5. Determine whether (a⃗⋅b⃗)c⃗×a⃗{(\vec{a} \cdot \vec{b})\vec{c}} \times \vec{a} is a vector, is a scalar or is meaningless. Explain your reasoning.
    Show solution
    This gives a vector because (a⃗⋅b⃗)(\vec{a} \cdot \vec{b}) gives a scalar. (a⃗⋅b⃗)c⃗(\vec{a} \cdot \vec{b})\vec{c} is scalar times vector, which gives a vector, and the cross product with a⃗\vec{a} gives a vector.
  6. What is the relationship between u⃗\vec{u}, v⃗\vec{v} and w⃗\vec{w} if (u⃗×v⃗)w⃗=0(\vec{u} \times \vec{v})\vec{w} = 0? Explain.
    Show solution
    u⃗×v⃗⋅w⃗→the volume of parallelepiped\vec{u} \times \vec{v} \cdot \vec{w} \rightarrow \text{the volume of parallelepiped} (u⃗×v⃗)w⃗=0→volume is 0(\vec{u} \times \vec{v})\vec{w} = 0 \rightarrow \text{volume is } 0 u⃗×v⃗=0\vec{u} \times \vec{v} = 0 It can be that u⃗\vec{u} and v⃗\vec{v} are collinear/parallel. w⃗\vec{w} is orthogonal with (u⃗×v⃗)(\vec{u} \times \vec{v}). Any two vectors are collinear can result in a flat plane.
  7. Given a⃗=[6,2,3]\vec{a} = [6, 2, 3] and b⃗=[−3,−1,z]\vec{b} = [-3, -1, z]. For what values of zz are the vectors:
    1. collinear?
      Show solution
      a⃗=kb⃗\vec{a} = k\vec{b} [6,2,3]=k[−3,−1,z][6, 2, 3] = k[-3, -1, z] 6=−3k6 = -3k 2=−k2 = -k k=−2k = -2 3=kz3 = kz 3=(−2)z3 = (-2)z z=−32z = -\dfrac{3}{2} ∴ z\therefore\ z is −32-\dfrac{3}{2} so that a⃗\vec{a} is collinear with b⃗\vec{b}
    2. orthogonal?
      Show answer
      a⃗⋅b⃗=0\vec{a} \cdot \vec{b} = 0 [6,2,3]⋅[−3,−1,z]=0[6, 2, 3] \cdot [-3, -1, z] = 0 −18+(−2)+(3z)=0-18 + (-2) + (3z) = 0 −20=−3z-20 = -3z z=203z = \dfrac{20}{3} ∴ z\therefore\ z is 203\dfrac{20}{3} so that a⃗⊥b⃗\vec{a} \perp \vec{b}
  8. Consider vectors a⃗=[3,−5,−1]\vec{a} = [3, -5, -1], b⃗=[4,1,0]\vec{b} = [4, 1, 0] and c⃗=[−2,−5,−1]\vec{c} = [-2, -5, -1].
    1. Find the area of the parallelogram defined by b⃗\vec{b} and c⃗\vec{c}.
      Show solution
      b⃗×c⃗=[4,1,0]×[−2,−5,−1]\vec{b} \times \vec{c} = [4, 1, 0] \times [-2, -5, -1] =[−1−0,  0−(−4),  −20−(−2)]= [-1 - 0,\; 0 - (-4),\; -20 - (-2)] =[−1,4,−18]= [-1, 4, -18] ∣b⃗×c⃗∣=(−1)2+(4)2+(−18)2=341 units2|\vec{b} \times \vec{c}| = \sqrt{(-1)^2 + (4)^2 + (-18)^2} = \sqrt{341}\text{ units}^2 ∴\therefore area of parallelogram defined by b⃗×c⃗\vec{b} \times \vec{c} is 341\sqrt{341} units2^2
    2. Find the volume of the parallelepiped defined by a⃗\vec{a}, b⃗\vec{b}, and c⃗\vec{c}.
      Show solution
      ∣(a⃗×b⃗)⋅c⃗∣\left|(\vec{a} \times \vec{b}) \cdot \vec{c}\right| =([3,−5,−1]×[4,1,0])⋅[−2,−5,−1]= \left([3, -5, -1] \times [4, 1, 0]\right) \cdot [-2, -5, -1] =[1,−4,23]⋅[−2,−5,−1]= [1, -4, 23] \cdot [-2, -5, -1] =−2+(20)+(−23)= -2 + (20) + (-23) =∣−5∣=5 units3= \left|-5\right| = 5\text{ units}^3 ∴\therefore the volume of the parallelepiped is 5 units3^3.

Cartesian Vectors FAQ

What is on an MCV4U dot and cross product test?+

Vectors in [x, y, z] form: magnitude and unit vectors, adding and scaling, the dot product and the angle between two vectors, projections, the cross product, and the areas and volumes they measure. The free test on this page covers each of these.

How do you find the angle between two vectors?+

Use u · v = |u||v| cos θ. Divide the dot product by the product of the magnitudes, then take the inverse cosine. A negative dot product means the angle is obtuse, like the 124.18° in question 2.

How do you tell if two vectors are collinear or orthogonal?+

Collinear means one is a scalar multiple of the other, so solve a = kb one component at a time. Orthogonal means the dot product is 0. Question 7 finds the value of z for each.

What do the cross product and the triple product measure?+

|u × v| is the area of the parallelogram the two vectors span. |(a × b) · c| is the volume of the parallelepiped the three vectors span, and a volume of 0 means the three vectors are coplanar.

Which gives a vector, the dot product or the cross product?+

The dot product gives a scalar and the cross product gives a vector, and the cross product only exists in 3D. Question 5 uses that to decide whether an expression is a vector, a scalar or meaningless.
