Functions & Transformations

Function notation
y=f(x)y = f(x)

Each xx in the domain gives exactly one yy.

Transformed function
y=af[k(x−d)]+cy = af\big[k(x - d)\big] + c
Mapping rule
(x, y)→(xk+d, ay+c)(x,\ y) \rightarrow \left(\frac{x}{k} + d,\ ay + c\right)

Stretch or reflect first, then translate.

Inverse
f(a)=b  ⟺  f−1(b)=af(a) = b \iff f^{-1}(b) = a

Swap xx and yy, then solve for yy.

Parent functions
y=x2y=1xy=xy=∣x∣y = x^2 \qquad y = \frac{1}{x} \qquad y = \sqrt{x} \qquad y = |x|

Rational Expressions

Multiplying radicals
a b=ab\sqrt{a}\,\sqrt{b} = \sqrt{ab}

For a,b≥0a, b \geq 0.

Dividing radicals
ab=ab\frac{\sqrt{a}}{\sqrt{b}} = \sqrt{\frac{a}{b}}

For a≥0a \geq 0, b>0b > 0.

Conjugates
(a+b)(a−b)=a−b\left(\sqrt{a} + \sqrt{b}\right)\left(\sqrt{a} - \sqrt{b}\right) = a - b
Multiplying
ab⋅cd=acbd\frac{a}{b} \cdot \frac{c}{d} = \frac{ac}{bd}

Restrictions: b,d≠0b, d \neq 0.

Dividing
ab÷cd=ab⋅dc\frac{a}{b} \div \frac{c}{d} = \frac{a}{b} \cdot \frac{d}{c}

Restrictions: b,c,d≠0b, c, d \neq 0.

Adding
ab+cd=ad+bcbd\frac{a}{b} + \frac{c}{d} = \frac{ad + bc}{bd}

Use the lowest common denominator when there is one.

Quadratic Functions
