What Average Do You Need for Western Medical Sciences?
Short answer: the mid to high 80s on paper, and 95 in the room. Western's requirements page gives Medical Sciences (OUAC code ESM) an admission average range of mid to high 80s, the typical range of last year's incoming class. In Fall 2022, 95.5% of Western's biological and biomedical sciences entrants from Ontario high schools came in at 90 or above, and 57.4% at 95 or above.
Western says: mid to high 80s, last year's incoming class[1][2]
The Numbers
| Average | Share of the entering class |
|---|---|
| 95+ | 57.4% |
| 90-94 | 38.1% |
| 85-89 | 4.4% |
| 80-84 | 0.1% |
Required Grade 12 Courses
- ENG4U: English
- MCV4U: Calculus & Vectors (free unit tests: Limits, Derivatives, Curve Sketching, Optimization, Derivatives of Trig, Exp and Log, Geometric Vectors, Cartesian Vectors, Lines and Planes)
- SBI4U: Biology
- SCH4U: Chemistry
Recommended
- SPH4U: Physics
All four required, inside a required-course average of at least 70%. Western says you can take first-year Physics without SPH4U, but recommends it to help with course selection.
Medical Sciences and the BMSc
ESM is the entry Western files under the Bachelor of Medical Science. Medical Sciences is the first-year entry; the BMSc modules you'll read about (Biochemistry, Physiology, Pharmacology and the rest) are chosen later in the degree, so the number on this page is the one that gets you in the door, not the one that gets you a module.
Why the range and the class disagree
Mid to high 80s is the range Western posts, and the CUDO table is who registered in Western's biological and biomedical sciences group: 57.4% at 95+, 38.1% at 90 to 94, 4.4% at 85 to 89 and 0.1% at 80 to 84. The entering average was 94.7, around eight points above the middle of the range Western names. Western says the ranges are last year's typical averages and that some students fall above and some below; for this group, nearly all fell above.
CUDO reports by group, so this is every biological and biomedical sciences entrant at Western, not Medical Sciences alone.
What these numbers mean for you
An 87 is inside the range and below 95.5% of the class that enrolled. A 92 is inside the band 38.1% came from. No supplementary application is listed, so there is nothing to lean on if the average is short, and nothing to carry a 95 further than it already goes.
