What Average Do You Need for Carleton Engineering?

Short answer: it depends on the major, from 75-80% to 88-90%. Carleton publishes a minimum cut-off per group of majors: 88-90% for Aerospace and Mechanical, 80-85% for Civil, Electrical, Mechatronics and others, and 75-80% for Software, Computer Systems and the rest. In Fall 2022, 37.8% of Carleton's engineering entrants from Ontario high schools came in at 90 or above, and 33.0% below 85.

Carleton says: minimum cut-offs of 75-80%, 80-85% or 88-90%, by major[1][2][3][4]

Required Grade 12 Courses

Recommended

  • ENG4U: English

Carleton requires the same four for every BEng major and does not require Grade 12 English; it says ENG4U is recommended for all degrees. Prerequisites must be 4U with no grade below 60%, and the cut-off applies to both your overall and your prerequisite average.

MHF4U builds on Grade 11 Functions, so if that's shaky, start with MCR3U.

Which tier is yours

Carleton's requirements page shows the chart once you pick Engineering, and its OUInfo listings file each major with the same range. Carleton says the overall average required for admission is determined each year on a program by program basis, so the chart is the bar that was set, not a promise about next year.

88-90%: Aerospace and Mechanical.

80-85%: Biomedical and Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Engineering Physics, Mechatronics, Sustainable Energy and Systems Security.

75-80%: Architectural Conservation and Sustainability, Biomedical and Electrical, Computer Systems, Environmental, Software, Sustainable Electrical Power and Telecommunications.

No English, no supplementary

Carleton is the only engineering faculty on this site that does not require ENG4U: it recommends it for all degrees and leaves the other two of your six courses open. No supplementary application, interview or profile is listed, so the average is the decision, and Carleton uses the highest grade from a repeated course when it calculates it.

Carleton says applicants admitted with an admission average of 85% or better are automatically considered for an entrance scholarship, which puts a second number on the same page as the cut-offs.

What these numbers mean for you

The CUDO table is who registered across every Carleton engineering major: 10.6% at 95+, 27.2% at 90 to 94, 29.2% at 85 to 89, 21.0% at 80 to 84 and 12.0% below 80. The entering average was 87.0, which sits above every published cut-off, so the cut-offs are floors and most of the class clears them with room.

An 82 clears the 80-85% tier if your prerequisite average does too, and is short of Aerospace and Mechanical. An 86 is above every tier but 88-90%. CUDO reports engineering as one group, so this is the faculty, not your major.
