What Average Do You Need for TMU Engineering?
Short answer: it depends on the program, and the gap is about five points. TMU's program pages post a grade range of 85-90% for Aerospace, Biomedical, Chemical, Computer, Industrial and Mechatronics Engineering and for Undeclared Engineering, and 90%+ for Civil, Electrical and Mechanical. In Fall 2022, 55.6% of TMU's engineering entrants from Ontario high schools came in at 90 or above.
TMU says: 85-90% for most programs, 90%+ for Civil, Electrical and Mechanical[1][2]
The Numbers
| Average | Share of the entering class |
|---|---|
| 95+ | 10.6% |
| 90-94 | 45% |
| 85-89 | 34.9% |
| 80-84 | 9.5% |
Required Grade 12 Courses
- ENG4U: English
- MHF4U: Advanced Functions (free unit tests: Polynomial Functions, Polynomial Equations, Rational Functions, Trigonometric Ratios, Trigonometric Functions, Exponential & Logarithmic Functions, Combining Functions)
- MCV4U: Calculus & Vectors (free unit tests: Limits, Derivatives, Curve Sketching, Optimization, Derivatives of Trig, Exp and Log, Geometric Vectors, Cartesian Vectors, Lines and Planes)
- SCH4U: Chemistry
- SPH4U: Physics
Same five for every TMU engineering program, each at 70% or better, and TMU wants a 70% overall average just to be considered. The range it actually admits at is fifteen to twenty points higher.
MHF4U builds on Grade 11 Functions, so if that's shaky, start with MCR3U.
Which range is yours
TMU posts the range at the top of each program page and says it "represents the average required in previous years", so it is last year's bar, not a promise about this one. The page adds that "the average needed for admission can fluctuate each year".
85-90%: Aerospace, Biomedical, Chemical, Computer, Industrial, Mechatronics and Undeclared Engineering.
90%+: Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.
Undeclared Engineering is listed as first-semester studies only, at the 85-90% range.
Grades only
TMU's engineering pages say "Admission decisions for Grades-Only programs are based on academic performance." No supplementary application, no interview, no profile.
That makes the number on the page count for more than it does at Waterloo or UofT, where a form sits next to your marks. It also means there is nothing to fall back on if the average is short.
What these numbers mean for you
The CUDO table is who registered across every TMU engineering program in Fall 2022: 10.6% at 95+, 45.0% at 90 to 94, 34.9% at 85 to 89 and 9.5% at 80 to 84. The entering average was 90.3.
So an 87 is inside the range most TMU programs post and inside the band a third of the class sat in. It is below the bar for Civil, Electrical and Mechanical. CUDO reports engineering as one group, so this is the faculty, not your program.
