What Average Do You Need for Waterloo Math?

Short answer: Waterloo says the mid-80s, and the class says 95. The Mathematics program page says it selects from the mid-80s. In Fall 2022, 68.1% of Waterloo's mathematics and statistics entrants from Ontario high schools came in at 95 or above, and 95.6% at 90 or above. That gap is the whole story of this page.

Waterloo says: individual selection from the mid-80s[1]

Required Grade 12 Courses

Six 4U or M courses including Advanced Functions, Calculus and Vectors, any 4U English and one other 4U course. Waterloo recommends Grade 11 U Introduction to Computer Science. This is the Faculty of Mathematics' general entry (OUAC code WM); Computer Science and the math/business programs have their own codes and ranges.

MHF4U builds on Grade 11 Functions, so if that's shaky, start with MCR3U.

The AIF and the Euclid

Waterloo's page says "The Admission Information Form is required for admission." It also says the contests are not: "Participation in the Canadian Senior Mathematics Contest and/or the Euclid Mathematics Contest is not required for admission, but writing one of these contests is required for some scholarships offered by the Faculty of Mathematics."

So write the Euclid if you can. It won't be held against you, it can pay, and in a program where nearly everyone has a 90, it is one of the few places to look different.

Why the range and the class disagree

Mid-80s is the lowest range any Waterloo Math program posts. The CUDO group is every mathematics and statistics entrant at once, and it doesn't include Computer Science, which Waterloo reports separately. Even without CS, 95.6% came in at 90 or above.

Read the table as the company you'll keep in first-year classes, not as the bar for an offer. "Individual selection" means the AIF and the rest of your file decide between applicants in range.

What these numbers mean for you

An 86 is inside the range Waterloo names and below 99.8% of the Fall 2022 entering class. That's not a contradiction, but it tells you an offer at 86 rests on the AIF, and that the class you'd join sits ten points higher.

A 92 is where 27.5% of the class came in, and a 95 is where most of it did. If you want Waterloo Math specifically and not CS, this entry is the one with room.
